Chemical Modification of Neem (Azadirachta indica) Biomass as Bioadsorbent for Removal of Pb2+ Ion from Aqueous Waste Water

In this study, neem biomass (a mixture of leaf and bark), obtained from the matured tree, which is an eco-friendly low-cost material was selected as a bioadsorbent to remove lead metal ion (Pb2+) aqueous solutions. Neem biomass-based having carboxylic group prepared by activation using chemical modification NaOH citric acid with very simple method. The optimal conditions were determined 37 min, 120°C, in 0.73 M acid, sample/acid ratio 1/100 (mass/volume). To determine basic properties such structure, porosity, surface (NB) chemically modified (CMNB), they characterized BET, FTIR, SEM, XRD, pHpzc methods. It observed that has improved adsorption capacity NB also caused more amorphous structure. effects parameters pH (2–7), contact time (10–110 min), initial Pb2+ concentration (100–300 g/L), dosage (01–1.1 g/L) on percentage removal studied. Maximum (97.29%) recorded at 0.9 g/L dosage, 50 min time, 6, 100 mg/L. Kinetics isotherm studies showed mechanism CMNB follows pseudosecond-order while fit both models but, relatively, Freundlich model better little higher R 2 = 0.9804 . outcome specifies can be utilized good alternative for treatment effluent containing (II) ions water.
